Only reputable kennels screen carefully both the dam and the sire prior to mating, so only in this case you have a guarantee that you buy a purebred and healthy puppy. Dogs with defective genes cannot be bred, even if they are champions. Purebred dogs are usually rather expensive and may reach up to $1000. If you are not going to show the dog, you can buy a pet quality animal at a lower price. It will posses the same instincts, but cannot take part in competitions and should be sterilized.
